Sharks and Pigs and Iguanas oh my!

Great Exuma and its Cays are the most exotic of the Bahamas Out Islands, like a collection of precious gems, the islands are set in a sea of Technicolor blues bordered by pristine beaches. The Grand Isle Resort & Spa sits on a mile-long stretch of ivory beach surrounded by the sparkling clear waters of Emerald Bay. Breezy and beautifully furnished, this spacious oceanfront villa captures the essence of the relaxed Bahamian lifestyle.

SWIMMING WITH THE SHARKS

Baby Shark do do do do do… On Compass Cay, you can actually go swimming with friendly nurse sharks and hundreds of colorful Caribbean reef fish that join you off the dock. Any squeamish members of your group can stay on dry land and pet the sharks from the dinghy dock as they surface to meet their new human friends. You are definitely going to need a bigger boat!

HANGING WITH THE IGUANAS

If you like Pina Coladas and hanging out with lizards then you’ll totally dig visiting the endangered Northern Bahamian Rock iguanas. These miniature sleestaks sun and socialize on Leaf Cay in the Allen’s Cays. Be sure to bring a lettuce leaf or two; these charmers love to nibble more than just your ear.

BOATING, BEACHING, AND KAYAKING

In the spirit of going places and doing things - water activities hit high on the Brilliant priority list. While taking a boat charter around the archipelago we were able to visit Musha Cay, the mile-long sandbar, and Thunderball Grotto. As you can imagine, everything is amazing. One of our favorite activities was paddling around the crystal blue waters in neon kayaks. Every day is magical in the Exumas!

JUNKANOO, FIREDANCE & S’MORES

The musicians have perfected the hypnotic rhythms as they perform a cacophony with goatskin drums, cowbells, whistles, and horns. The imaginative costumes are on display as the energy of the dancers and the beat of the music motivates the crowd of spectators to their feet! We followed the lively parade to the beach where a giant fire pit awaited our marshmallows for seaside s’mores.

Celebrate the tastes and traditions of the Bahamas poolside at The Palapa Grill, where fresh, local seafood is served alongside the ocean in the tropical outdoor setting. From Caribbean jerk-style seafood to delicious barbecue, they serve up flavorful island cuisine along with familiar American-style favorites.

You can also stop by the full-service bar throughout the day for a tempting selection of tropical cocktails. My spirit of choice is the classic Margarita!
